Kurti vs Kurta: What's the Difference?

Kurti and kurta sound almost the same, and shops often use both words for one piece. There is a difference, though, and it mostly comes down to length, fit and who wears it. Here's how to tell them apart, where kurta sets and tunic tops fit in, and what to wear with each one.

The quick answer

A kurta is a long, loose shirt that reaches around the knee or lower, worn by men and women across India and Pakistan. A kurti is the women's version, usually shorter and more fitted, often ending between the upper thigh and the knee, with more playful necklines, sleeves and embroidery.

In everyday shopping the line is blurry. Many sellers call any women's top a kurti, and a long women's piece may be listed as a kurta, a kurti or both. Pieces in this shop often carry both names, like "Kurti / Kurta", so they turn up whichever word you search for. A simple way to remember it: every kurti is a kind of kurta, but not every kurta is a kurti.

Kurta: the longer, classic shirt

Kurta is the older word for the older garment. A traditional kurta is straight, roomy and comfortable, with side slits so you can walk and sit easily. Men wear kurtas with pajamas, churidars or jeans; for women, a kurta usually means a long straight or A-line shirt at or below the knee.

Because it is long, a women's kurta is usually worn as part of a suit, over a shalwar, salwar, churidar or straight pants, often with a dupatta. In Pakistan, when it comes as part of a suit, the same shirt is usually just called the kameez or the shirt. A long silk kurta also looks smart over slim pants on its own, with no dupatta at all.

Kurti: shorter, fitted and easy to style

The kurti grew out of the kurta as a shorter top for women. It is often cut closer to the body, and lengths run from short peplum tops to just above the knee. That makes it the go-to piece for mixing desi and Western clothes, and a kurti with jeans is one of the most common outfits for college, the office or a weekend errand.

Kurtis usually have more decorative details: embroidery at the neck, sequin or mirror work, bell or three-quarter sleeves. Long kurtis exist too, and they look good with leggings or straight pants. In this shop the short kurtis are 36 inches long or less and the long ones 42 inches or more, so check the length on each listing to see where it will fall.

Other names you'll see: sets, suits and tunics

A few more words you'll see while shopping:

  • Kurta set: a kurta sold with matching pants, palazzos or a salwar, and sometimes a dupatta. In Pakistan the same idea is called a 2-piece (shirt and trousers) or a 3-piece (with a dupatta).
  • Co-ord set: a matching top and pants in the same fabric or print, usually with a shorter or straighter top.
  • Salwar suit or salwar kameez: the full outfit of kameez (the shirt), salwar and dupatta. "Suit" is the everyday word for it in both countries.
  • Tunic top: the American word for a long top worn over leggings or slim pants. Most kurtis are tunics by another name, and many people in the US search for them that way.

Short or long: which one to pick

Pick a short kurti if you want something quick to wear with jeans, a modern look for work, or a top that won't swamp a petite frame. Pick a longer kurti or kurta if you want more coverage, a more traditional feel, or something to wear with leggings, where the extra length really matters.

Height plays a part too, but less than you'd think. A long kurta looks elegant on tall women and still works on petite women with high side slits and slim pants, and a short kurti tends to make the legs look longer. None of these are rules: the right one is the one you feel good in.

Everyday, office or party: picking the fabric

Fabric matters as much as length. Cotton kurtis are the everyday workhorse: breathable, easy to wash and smart enough for work with straight pants. Linen feels similar but a little crisper, and a plain cotton or linen kurti is the classic office wear kurti on both sides of the border.

For a dawat, a festival or a party, look for viscose with sequin or embroidery work, georgette, or silk with its soft shine. Chikankari, the white-thread embroidery from Lucknow, sits in between: dressy enough for a family lunch, relaxed enough for a summer afternoon. Long silk kurtas are a favorite for Eid, Diwali and weddings, for men and women alike.

Whatever you choose, check the listing. Every piece in this shop gives its fabric, its size and its chest, hips and length in inches, and you can ask Shagufta on WhatsApp for a video or extra photos before you order.

What to wear with a kurti or kurta

The bottoms decide whether the look feels casual, smart or festive.

  • Jeans: best with kurtis that end around mid-thigh or just above the knee. Slim or straight jeans keep the look neat, and wide-leg jeans work with a fitted kurti.
  • Palazzos: wide, flowing pants that suit both short and long kurtis and feel cool in summer.
  • Shalwar or salwar: the traditional pairing for a long kurta, roomy and comfortable.
  • Leggings or churidar: slim bottoms that let a long kurta or a longer kurti take center stage.
  • Straight or cigarette pants: a neat office choice with either length.
  • Dupatta: optional with a kurti, more usual with a kurta suit. Drape it over one shoulder for an easy look.

Questions people ask

Is a kurti the same as a kurta?

Not quite. A kurta is a longer, looser shirt worn by men and women, and a kurti is a women's top that is usually shorter and more fitted. Many shops use the words loosely, so check the length on the listing.

Which is correct, kurti or kurta?

Both are correct words with slightly different meanings. Kurta is the traditional word for the long shirt, and kurti is used for women's shorter tops. For a woman's long piece, either word is fine.

What is a kurta set?

A kurta with matching pants, palazzos or a salwar, and sometimes a dupatta, sold together so the whole outfit matches. In Pakistani shops the same idea is called a 2-piece or 3-piece suit.

Can I wear a kurti with jeans?

Yes. A short or mid-thigh kurti with slim or straight jeans is one of the easiest everyday outfits. Long kurtis work too, especially with slim jeans and flats or boots.

Is a kurti a tunic top?

Yes, in American terms. A tunic is a long top that covers the hips, worn over leggings or slim pants, and a kurti is a South Asian tunic, often with embroidery, prints and side slits.
