Start with the length of the kurti
Kurtis come in three rough lengths. A short kurti, or kurti top, ends between the hip and mid-thigh and is usually under about 34 inches long. A knee-length kurti is roughly 36 to 40 inches. A long kurti, 42 inches and up, falls below the knee toward the calf. Many US stores call the shorter styles tunic tops.
Those lengths are for a woman of about 5 ft 4 in. If you are taller or shorter, the same kurti lands higher or lower, so compare the length with a top or dress you already own. Every piece in Shagufta's shop lists its own length, chest and hips in inches. Most of her kurtis are 36 to 40 inches long, the in-between length that works with almost any pants; her cotton peplum top is 31 inches, and the long silk kurtis run 42 to 47 inches.
Which jeans go with which kurti
Think of it as balance: the more fabric on top, the slimmer the pants should be.
- Skinny jeans or jeggings: the easiest match for any length, and the best one for long kurtis, because a slim leg balances the extra fabric on top.
- Straight-leg jeans: great with short and knee-length kurtis. Pick a kurti with side slits so it sits flat over the hips.
- Wide-leg, baggy or flared jeans: keep the kurti short or fitted so the outfit doesn't turn into one big shape. A hip-length kurti or a peplum top looks sharp with wide jeans and a small heel or platform.
- Bootcut jeans: a knee-length kurti with a straight hem works well; let the jeans cover most of the shoe.
Colors and prints
Dark blue and black jeans look the smartest and go with every print. Light-wash denim feels more relaxed and suits white, pastel and cotton kurtis in summer. A busy print or heavy embroidery on top looks best over plain dark denim, while a plain kurti can take lighter or even white jeans.
A black kurti with blue jeans is a classic that rarely fails, and a white kurti with dark jeans is just as easy. If the kurti has a matching dupatta, you can leave it at home; with jeans, many women skip it or wear a light scarf instead.
When to pick palazzos, a shalwar or leggings instead
Jeans are not the only choice, and some kurtis look better with something softer:
- Palazzos: wide, flowing pants that look lovely with short and knee-length kurtis, cool in summer and dressy enough for a dawat. A matching kurti and palazzo is sold as a palazzo set or co-ord set.
- Shalwar: the traditional Pakistani choice, roomy at the top and gathered at the ankle. A tulip shalwar has an overlapping, petal-shaped hem and looks neat under a knee-length kurti.
- Leggings or churidar: slim and stretchy, best with longer, flared or anarkali-style kurtis, and the warmest option in winter.
- Cigarette pants and straight cotton trousers: tidy, ankle-length and good for the office.
- Gharara pants: flared from the knee down, for weddings and parties with a short kurti.
Office looks with a kurti
For work, choose a cotton or linen kurti in a solid color or small print, about knee length, with straight trousers, cigarette pants or dark straight-leg jeans if your office allows denim. Keep the embroidery to the neckline and cuffs and save sequins for the evening. In cooler months a longer kurti over slim black pants looks polished under a blazer or long cardigan.
Fabric matters at a desk all day. Cotton breathes and doesn't cling, linen looks crisp in the morning and relaxed by the afternoon, and viscose feels soft and cool but creases more easily, so hang it up as soon as you get home.
Three easy office outfits to start with:
- A white or pale cotton kurti, navy straight trousers and loafers.
- A navy or black cotton kurti, dark straight jeans and ballet flats or juttis.
- A printed knee-length kurti, plain black cigarette pants and block heels.
Shoes and finishing touches
Accessories finish the look. Add silver jhumkas, a few bangles or a watch and a crossbody bag; with a printed kurti keep the jewelry simple, and with a plain one let statement earrings do the talking. Shoes set the tone of the whole outfit:
- Khussas or juttis: flat, embroidered and made for kurtis; they work with jeans, palazzos and a shalwar.
- Flat leather sandals or kolhapuris for summer weekends.
- White sneakers with a short kurti and straight or wide jeans for an easy everyday look.
- Block heels or wedges with palazzos and wide jeans, so the hem doesn't drag.
- Ankle boots with skinny jeans and a longer kurti in fall and winter.
Getting the fit right when you order online
A kurti over jeans relies on the hip fit as much as the length. Lay a kurti that fits you well flat, measure across the chest just under the arms and across the hips, and double each number. Compare those with the chest and hips on the listing; a few inches more than your own body measurement lets the kurti skim smoothly over denim.
If you are between two sizes, the size guide explains how to choose, and Shagufta is happy to send a video or extra photos on WhatsApp before you order.
